The recently opened Barn Joo in Flatiron is serving up traditional Korean gastropub food and fusing it with American dishes and techniques. We get the lowdown on this new tri-level eatery from chef David Lee and owner Charles Chong in the video above.

- PSY Pays Tribute to Beyonce At South Korea Concert, Debuts ‘Gentleman’ Live-

PSY made a major announcement last month (March) when he revealed he’d debut the follow-up to his global smash “Gangnam Style” at an April 13 concert in South Korea. While PSY ended up premiering his second single, “Gentleman,” days before, he managed to keep fans on their toes with a handful of surprises through out his show.PSY used the Happening Concert to also showcase his talents as an artist. “My international fans are all about ‘Gangnam Style.’ A lot of my international fans think I’m a comedian,” he said. “No matter what you think I am, I know what I am. To all the fans who [are] watching this concert by YouTube, I want to show you my first dream was [to be a] composer. I can compose slow and R&B songs; I can sing it as well.” He moved into self-written, “Thrilled,” before the stage enveloped in darkness.

The stage lit up with the luminous lettering that read: “I dedicate the next stage to Beyonce.” The video to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” began to play on the big screen, except PSY’s version featured his face on Bey’s body. PSY, and two dancers, re-appeared in body-hugging red bodysuits to perform the Bey’s hit. PSY nailed the dance moves; it was impressive considering he was in go-go booots.

The new music video features choreography based around 2009 K-pop hit “Abracadabra” by Brown Eyed Girls

The new music video features choreography based around 2009 K-pop hit “Abracadabra” by Brown Eyed Girls

The music video for “Gentleman,” released Saturday morning (April 13), follows a similar style to “Gangnam” and its much-loved antics.

“Gentleman” has an added sexual twist. Despite the new single being titled “Gentleman” the video showcases the K-pop king being anything but. He’s pulling chairs out from beneath beautiful women, making little kids cry and attempting to pull off sunbathing girls’ tops. That is, until popular and sexy K-pop singer Ga In shows up in a body-hugging football outfit. Now, the tables are turned on PSY who is having chairs pulled out from underneath him.

Ga In is a member of popular K-pop girl group Brown Eyed Girls who also has her own successful solo career–her single “Bloom” peaked at No. 2 on the K-Pop Hot 100 in October and latest single “Brunch” just debuted at No. 36 this week. She is PSY’s new co-star a la HyunA (a member of girl group 4minute and solo star herself) in “Gangnam Style.”

The subtle hip-shaking choreography featured throughout “Gentleman” is actually homage to her group’s mammoth 2009 hit “Abracadabra.” The single helped usher in a wave of electro-pop to Korea with its slick production, vocal-distorting effects topped off with a sugary sweet catchy hook. PSY had previously teased that Koreans knew the main dance move of the video very well and “Abracadabra” has stood the test of time as a major hit in the ever-changing K-pop culture.

Will it break the view count for “Gangnam Style”? Several months will need to go by prove that, but with over 50,000 attending his concert in Korea tonight and around 150,000 watching via a YouTube stream, there’s definitely no lack of hype for PSY’s new single.

Zagat: “Barn Joo” Takes Korean Gastropub Trend A Step Further

Zagat: “Barn Joo” Takes Korean Gastropub Trend A Step Further By: Kelly Dobkin

Korean restaurants are going high-end in New York City, and this week, Zagat editor Kelly Dobkin visited one large new restaurant in the Flatiron District. She filed the following report.

“Barn Joo” is taking the already popular Korean gastropub trend a step further by preparing farm-to-table versions of Korean classics with an American twist.
“What we are doing is traditional Korean food and plating it as American food, kind of transformed to American food,” says Executive Chef David Lee. “The big difference is, if you go to a Korean restaurant you will see a plate which you don’t know how to eat it. But this one, when you get a plate, very similar to other American food, but when you taste it, then you will think, ‘Oh, this is a Korean flavor.’”

“Barn Joo“, which in Korean means “musical accompaniment to food”, features three levels, with the basement providing a stage for live music performances. Ropes, swings and poetry line the walls of the main floor.

“Barn Joo‘s meaning is eating, drink and play,” said owner Charlie Chong. “People come here and enjoy and are happy, and they leave happier.”

Lee puts his own unique spin on classics like fried chicken and chik bokki, a special chicken meatball.

“We use organic chicken breast as well as garlic, onion, a little bit of dijon mustard and mayonnaise and bread crumbs,” Lee said. “It’s basically the same preparation as any other people, but we use our Korean traditional spices.”

Barn Joo is located at 893 Broadway.

Barn Joo Featured in The Wall Street Journal: “Expanding Korean Flavor”

Expanding Korean Flavor

Korea just got closer to downtown Manhattan.

Barn Joo opened in March just north of Union Square. “It can be quite a trip to Koreatown,” executive director Seolbin Park said. Barn Joo offers Korean flavor, though not always in traditional Korean dishes.

The name translates two ways, said Ms. Park: “food accompanying drink” and “play the music.” The large space is made more intimate by transparent dividers and knotted ropes hanging from the ceiling, and the service is attentive and friendly.

Ms. Park said that the Korean fried chicken is a favorite, which is made with locally raised poultry. The BJ Wings ($13) come in varieties like soy garlic or simple salt and pepper. The chick bokki ($12), chopped chicken and a rice cake with Korean hot-pepper paste, is also popular.

The angry salmon roll ($17)—with salmon, fried shrimp and salmon roe—and the kimchi pancake ($12) are good starters to share with the table. Barn Joo offers lunch specials like bulgogi sliders (3 for $12) and like spicy pork or beef dup bap rice bowls ($12).
