“Kirakuya makes something of a sleek impression, no doubt about it; it’s also low-key, comfortable and welcoming, a good place to start with an order of edamame ($5) and a draft Sapporo ($6) in a chilled ceramic mug before moving on to sake and a procession of small plates.

The specialty of Kirakuya is its small-brewery sakes; the roster features more than 100 of them. The friend I was drinking and dining with spent more than a dozen years in Japan and knows his way around a list, but if you’re on your own, the menu offers good guidance (including notations on which selections are less likely to induce hangovers) The staff is helpful, and complimentary tastes are offered.”
